3 Questions to ask before choosing a Newborn Photographer

Choosing a newborn photographer can be a bit confusing. Each photographer has a style and way of creating those darling images that we all love. 3 questions to ask yourself when considering newborn photographers.

One

Do you like their work? Do they have a quality portfolio?
Each photographer has a different style. From the way they compose the images and use the light; to how they edit the final image.

So when looking at a photographer's portfolio make sure you like it. Asking a photographer to change their work to fit your vision won't necessarily give you the images you're wanting. We spend hours perfecting our sessions and editing. Photographers want nothing more than for you to love your images -- so choose a photographer that you like their portfolio.

What is their experience?
Posing newborns is an art. In order to pose a baby safely it is important that a newborn photographer is trained. Knowing how to move, wrap and properly hold baby for safety is so important.

Education and experience help with that. A newborn photographer should know when a baby can be posed and when a baby needs support and when to create a composite, plus how to create that composite.

Take the froggy pose for example -- those darling little legs all curled up underneath baby and hands under their chin. When baby is in this pose your photographer should NEVER take their hands off of baby. This image is put together in photoshop by composing two images together.

Experience and education come in here -- The photographer needs to be educated to know that it isn't safe for the baby to hold themselves in this position. We all have heard "support their head" when being handed a newborn. Same applies here.

THREE

Can I choose?
Part of a good experience is being able to choose what you want and what you're comfortable with. The questionnaire is a great way to get to know the family and what you're wanting out of the session. Your photographer should respect your wishes.

My top priority is your baby is comfortable and safe. When working together I want to ensure that I honor your wishes when it comes to colors, specific poses you're hoping for or special items you bring in. This is all part of the experience.

By asking yourself these few questions it gives you a good base for selecting your photographer. Handing your newborn baby to someone and trusting that they know how to keep the baby safe and give you beautiful artwork to cherish for years to come is an important decision.
